As followers of Christ, we don’t just read the Bible to make us feel good or when we need an answer. The Words of God are breath and life to a believer, we receive wisdom, comfort, guidance, and joy by these words – as well as by the Spirit.
An analogy that I love is that people are like sponges. When you squeeze a sponge, whatever it has been soaking in will come out. In the same way when people are under pressure whatever they have been thinking about, listening to, or watching will come out; whether it be anxious thoughts and fearful behavior or the words and wisdom of God.
Especially during this time of tribulation, we must intentionally stay filled up with the powerful words of God. That way when we are faced with bad news or start to become overwhelmed by the current state of the world, we will not be gripped with fear but instead, the Word of God in us will be the encouragement we need to keep us going and believing God.
Matthew 4:4 says, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” (NKJV) A day should not pass that we neglect to read scripture and spend time in the presence of God. Not out of obligation, but because His words are life to His children and when we stay filled with the Word, we will be stronger and more capable of hearing God’s voice.
I encourage you not only today but every day, to set aside time just for reading your Bible. The Word of God in you will bring you abundant peace and strength as you face each day ahead.
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” ~ Hebrews 4:12 NKJV
