When you approach a stop sign, first you stop and then look both ways. If not, you risk getting into an accident and never reaching your destination.
The same applies to the stop signs I’ve shared over the last few weeks. You risk not walking in victory and joy if you don’t stop!
Watch for stop signs so you can:
- STOP making everything about you.
- STOP complaining.
- STOP making promises you cannot keep.
And today’s is to stop gossiping.
When you gossip, you communicate that you cannot be trusted with private information.
Gossip, to me, is the same as murder. I KNOW, BIG STATEMENT!
When you murder someone, you kill them once, but when you gossip about someone, you murder them many times.
What do I mean by that?
You murder their reputation.
You murder their character.
You murder the way other’s see them.
And vice versa, you murder your character, reputation, and how others see you.
Before gossiping about someone or something, ask yourself this question,
“If they heard me say these words, would it cheer, lift, or build them up?” If not, that’s a good indicator to keep that information private.
Gossip is one of the most destructive things that can be found in a child of God.
Those who tend to gossip believe that making someone else look lesser makes them look greater.
Our value does not come from what we know about other people. Our value comes from the fact that we know the living God and the grace that he has shown us.
Choose not to talk about it this week, but pray about it!
Proverbs 20:19, “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much.”
Proverbs 26:20, “Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down.”
Proverbs 11:13, “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.”
